- Our first meeting of Bethel Baptist Church took place in March of 1961, at a former service station building in Clifford, Virginia. Later that year, we purchased what is the present Church property on Route 29 North in Amherst. The first worship service on these premises was conducted during 1962 in the newly constructed basement. The main sanctuary was completed in 1966. Sanctuary seating capacity was later expanded with the addition of the front entrance, church offices and a nursery.
In 1972, we purchased the land behind the church to develop a youth camp. Our camp has three cabins, a dining hall, shower rooms, a ball field and a 375 foot long water slide.
In 1998, we constructed a gymnasium fitted with a complete kitchen along with second floor classrooms. . We use the gymnasium to host events such as Vacation Bible School, various conferences and other special church activities.
The Bethel church family makes every effort to reach out to the surrounding communities. We have an active bus and youth ministry. Our youth activities include camps, ski trips, sporting events, mission trips and much more. We also host Sunday and Wednesday evening meeting for teenagers.
God continues to bless our Faith Promise Program which permits us to maintain support for over 25 missionaries around the world. There is ample opportunity to meet, interact and better understand the challenges facing our missionaries at our annual Missions Conference.
At the heart of all the activities and programs supported at Bethel is a sincere desire to honor and glorify the Lord. The preaching and teaching of God’s Word at Bethel is centered on doing what the Lord has commanded us to do in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
